Sierra Club Endorses Democrat Stew Henderson
OLYMPIA – The Sierra Club announced today their sole endorsement of Stew Henderson, a Democratic activist and small business owner who is running to replace retiring Representative Brendan Williams in the 22nd Legislative District.
"Of all the candidates in this race, we know that Stew will stand up to big oil in our effort to clean up our air and water. Stew has the environmental, business, and governmental background to lead us in creating green jobs for a new clean green economy. He has the passion and energy to work to protect our valuable natural environment to maintain a sustainable and livable community,” said Bliss Moore, member of the Sierra Club State Executive and Political Committees.
A growing force in the Washington Legislature is the Blue-Green Alliance, a coalition of legislators backed by both Labor and environmental groups working toward a common progressive agenda. Henderson is the only candidate in the race to win support from both Labor and environmental groups, including Washington Federation of State Employees and Washington Conservation Voters.
Henderson, the only candidate the Sierra Club has endorsed for the open seat in the 22nd, has already earned broad support in the environmental community, including:
Sandra Romero and Karen Valenzuela, Thurston County Commissioners
Jay Manning, former Director, WA Dept. of Ecology
Martha Kongsgaard
Edie Gillis, Senior Advisor to Lands Commissioner Peter Goldmark
Beth Doglio, Gregg Small, and K.C. Golden, Climate Solutions
“I'm humbled to earn the sole endorsement of this group of committed conservationists,” said Henderson. “This endorsement reflects the grassroots support of environmentalists across Thurston County and the South Sound.”
As State Representative, Henderson pledges to focus on creating jobs, fully funding education, and protecting the environment. “I will work to reform our unjust tax system to give middle-class families their fair share, and defend critical services and equal rights for all.” Henderson is the official nominee of the Democratic Party.
The Cascade Chapter is the WA State branch of the nationwide Sierra Club. Their mission is to explore, enjoy, and protect the wild places of the earth; to practice and promote the responsible use of the earth's ecosystems and resources; to educate and enlist humanity to protect and restore the quality of the natural and human environment; and to use all lawful means to carry out these objectives. This endorsement reflects the position of the state and national organizations.###
